Not Just Law—The Supreme Court Is Reshaping Public Debate in India

Supreme Court

New Delhi, July 21, 2025 – The Supreme Court of India is once again what everyone's talking about. Lately, a bunch of stuff involving the Court has been all over social media and the news. From big legal calls to tricky public issues, here’s a quick look at why the Supreme Court is trending right now.

One big thing is a case the Court started itself. The judges are asking if agencies like the CBI or ED can just call lawyers in for questioning just because they represent someone being looked at. This is making people worry about how lawyers can do their jobs without being scared. The court is trying to make sure lawyers have the space they need to do their job right.

Also, the Court gave the Centre and Maharashtra government a final warning. It told them they have to set up special courts for NIA cases (usually terrorism-related) by September 2025. If they don't, the Court might start Letting prisoners out on bail because trials are taking too long. The judges said that regular courts are already packed, and adding NIA cases just makes it worse.

The Supreme Court also talked recently about how some people are using free speech to be jerks on social media. There were cases about nasty posts and cartoons aimed at public figures, even the Prime Minister. The judges said people need to watch what they share online because these posts often cause hate and mess up public peace. The Court might think about how to deal with this issue soon.

A few days ago, the Court also sided with a couple who'd been apart for over 16 years. It said keeping the marriage going was pointless and just caused stress. Using its special power under Article 142, the Court gave them a divorce. This call shows they’re thinking about what’s best these days, where feeling good emotionally is important in family stuff.

Another case that’s getting attention is the NEET-UG 2025 entrance exam. Some kids complained that their scores were messed up by power outages at their exam centers, mostly in Madhya Pradesh. The Supreme Court took the case and asked the National Testing Agency to respond. Since counselling starts this week, this is a big deal for tons of students.

On top of all that, a Mumbai lawyer filed a complaint against MNS leader Raj Thackeray. The lawyer says his recent speeches stirred up division based on language and could cause public trouble. The petition wants legal action under the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita laws. This has kicked off another debate about saying what you want and being responsible in politics.

So, those are the main reasons the Supreme Court is in the news. Each of these things touches regular people’s lives, whether it’s about getting justice, being free, getting an education, or living with respect. INX24 will keep up with all the updates and bring you the stories that you care about.
